Our Latest Technology Keeps Your Treatment Comfortable
To eliminate gum disease, we use a deep cleaning process called scaling and root planing. We remove plaque, tartar, and other debris from between your teeth and gums, cleaning all the way down to the tooth roots. Then we smooth the roots to make it tougher for bacteria to accumulate. In some cases, Dr. Workman may also remove infected gum tissue.Dr. Workman on treating gum disease Read Transcript
Gum disease is, probably, one of the diseases that can be maintained. You can’t cure gum disease, but you can maintain it with good home care and frequent visits to the hygienist, if necessary.
A lot of patients are unaware they even have gum disease. It doesn’t hurt until it’s in its advanced stages where they start to have much more severe bleeding and swelling. And so, we feel it’s very, very important in our office to make sure that you’re aware of it and where it needs to be taken care of and how you can help in keeping it under control because it’s not curable, but it’ll take your teeth. In fact, it’s the number one reason people lose teeth is from perio.
Smoking is one of the reasons people lose teeth. You don’t have the bleeding that happens in a regular, normal mouth, but smoking will mask the cardinal sign of periodontal disease and that’s bleeding.
So, you have an active infection that needs to be kept under control. You have to keep the bacteria in your mouth and that means you have to do your work at home and we have to help you in a very excellent way in our office.
We use a tool called an ultrasonic scaler to improve your dental outcome while ensuring your comfort. Treatment with this tool, which uses high-frequency vibration to clean your teeth, is:
- Quicker than manual cleaning
- Effective, as it disinfects as it cleans
- Comfortable, as no scraping is involved
If removing gum tissue is necessary, our soft-tissue laser does it quickly and painlessly. If you’d like to be numb, we’ll use the STA Single Tooth Anesthesia System® that allows us to apply local anesthesia only where you need it. No more numb lips and tongue for hours after your procedure! And if you’re really nervous, you can get dental sedation.
