Protect Your Health With Gum Disease Treatment in Glen Ellyn

Glen Ellyn, IL dentist Dr. John C. Workman looks for signs of periodontal (gum) disease during every dental exam. If he finds evidence of it, we eliminate it with a deep cleaning treatment. Proactive care is important because it will:

  • Help you keep your teeth. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among American adults.
  • Relieve painful symptoms like tender and bleeding gums.
  • Improve your oral health, as gum disease contributes to many dental problems.
  • Keep you healthier overall, as gum disease has been linked to health conditions like diabetes.
  • Improve your smile’s appearance by keeping gums from receding.

In addition to being damaging, gum disease is also common. The CDC estimates that more than half of U.S. adults have some form of gum infection.

Our Latest Technology Keeps Your Treatment Comfortable

To eliminate gum disease, we use a deep cleaning process called scaling and root planing. We remove plaque, tartar, and other debris from between your teeth and gums, cleaning all the way down to the tooth roots. Then we smooth the roots to make it tougher for bacteria to accumulate. In some cases, Dr. Workman may also remove infected gum tissue.

We use a tool called an ultrasonic scaler to improve your dental outcome while ensuring your comfort. Treatment with this tool, which uses high-frequency vibration to clean your teeth, is:

  • Quicker than manual cleaning
  • Effective, as it disinfects as it cleans
  • Comfortable, as no scraping is involved

If removing gum tissue is necessary, our soft-tissue laser does it quickly and painlessly. If you’d like to be numb, we’ll use the STA Single Tooth Anesthesia System® that allows us to apply local anesthesia only where you need it. No more numb lips and tongue for hours after your procedure! And if you’re really nervous, you can get dental sedation.
