What we do is we actually welcome input from patients ’cause this is their mouth. This is going to be their smile and they have to be comfortable with what it looks like. One of the things you can do in terms of before you even start is you can do what’s called a “trial smile,” and it’s nothing more than putting on acrylicshapedlike what the teeth will look like when they’re done. It takes about 10 minutes for one appointment and then about two weeks later, it takes about another 15, 20 minutes, and it gives you a sense of what your teeth will look like having veneers done here.
It’s not exact, but it gives you an idea before you even start treatment, and that’s great, but during the treatment, when you do these veneers or anything cosmetic or even dealing with your bite, getting things all back to normal, you can work out the details and the comfort level with the patient in temporaries. So let’s suppose we had 8, 10 teeth in the front we were going to do. We actually do a diagnostic wax-up of what we think will look good for the patient. So when we prepare the teeth, now we put the temporaries on, and now you got temporary crowns. Many times, the temporary crowns—and patients say it—look absolutely beautiful. But we’re able to test it out, have the patient wear them, and they get to look at them and they get to say what they don’t like, what they do like, and what changes they would like to have placed. Sometimes, we can do those changes right in the mouth to the point where the patient can say, “This looks good to me.“
Also, they get to feel how they feel in their bite. Does it function the way it should? Teeth are supposed to rub against one another the right way, otherwise you end up destroying them over a period of time. But you’re able to work that out with the temporary crowns and then, once the patient says, “I’m pleased with this,“ then you can take an impression of it and the technician can actually duplicate what you’re seeing with just temporaries, and that’s a great confidence-builder for the patient.
Now I’ll make one little caveat here: I couldn’t give you the beautiful smile with those teeth unless I had a very talented technician, and that’s probably one the things that, you know, what’s a cosmetic?Everybody’s a cosmetic dentist today, but if they don’t have the things in place and the talented people to help you in terms of the lab technician that does this all the time and you work with them all the time, they can’t give you the beautiful veneers and cosmetics that patients actually really want. So, if you’re going to spend the money, why not get the best? And that’s what I try to do for our patients when we are doing the cosmetic cases. We want to make sure that they get the best.
